“The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas”
Woody Allen said: “The book was charming and interesting. I was shocked. I couldn’t believe that he (Brazilian author Machado de Assis) had lived such a long time ago. One would think that he had written it yesterday. It’s so modern and interesting.” http://www.amazon.com/Posthumous-Memoirs-Cubas-Library-America/dp/0195101707

“Há duas formas para viver a sua vida:
Uma é acreditar que não existe milagre.
A outra é acreditar que todas as coisas são um milagre.”
There are two ways to live your life:

BRAZILIAN HEART
April 2011
Since 1998
At 10:27am the bus crossed the Delaware River. It was a sunny day, but crisp cold. Everything was so clear; a clarity you wish you had when you’re stressed out. The countryside was beautiful even though the trees were still naked; the smile of the light green of the grass growing in the middle of patches of snow saying “Hey! It’s me again!” My mind gave special attention to the Indian names of the avenues and towns. Any bit of history ignited my attention even if I was half asleep or my back hurt. Another Toll? Wow! There are many around there. We moved from Middletown, Connecticut to Rehoboth, Delaware passing through the outskirts of New Jersey one more time. During the way I read few pages of the book my friend Dev gave me in New Mexico. It’s called Songs of Bliss.
“But talking and wandering
Won’t bring the experience
You’re searching for.”
I paused to think about the gypsy in me; that kind that feels a sense of urgency, like life is going to end at any time; that one that wants to swallow all the knowledge in this world in one gulp. Because of that being, I have the tendency to stumble over my words, talk on top of my friends’ talk, eat and read at the same time, and sometimes wish I‘d be in another place. In a way it’s funny and I seem to be entertained by my monkey mind. But once in a while, the overwhelming mental wanderer plays tricks on me when I’m on the stage waiting for the cue to start singing. “I forgot that part of the lyrics again; wow I never heard that bass embezzlement before; this cowbell is so loud; love the way we play with each other; remember to tell him to slow down the tempo, what a great piano solo, man; that guy on the first row looks so sad; what can I do to make people happy; this monitor sucks; my knee hurts; These days I’m aware of the endless dance of my thoughts and this bothers me. Then I remember a friend telling me to embrace it all, so I repeat to myself: “Embrace it all, Katia.” I notice I physically embrace myself, and then I feel comforted.

There’s nothing like swimming in the Atlantic Ocean waters! Ah…so warm…It feels like being in a womb. Yes, I miss my mom. ; ) She used to make my clothe, and definitely made my first Carnaval outfit. I learned some sewing tricks and decided to make my own costume when I was 18. It was a toga dress for a College party. My friends and I decided that Ancient Rome would be the theme of that night. The mini dress was made of a pale green cotton fabric with gold trims. So much fun! This Carnaval I'll be a bird!
From today on, Brasil will be on vacations for at least a week. It’s Carnaval again, folks! Join me! I’ll be singing at the biggest Brazilian Carnaval in So Cal @ Club Nokia starting at 9pm. For more info: www.braziliannites.com

INSPIRAÇÃO (Inspira Ação) - INSPIRATION (Inspire Action)
One of my artistic inspirations in life is Regina Casé (actress, cultural agitator, and host of a Brazilian TV program called “Um Pé de Quê?” about Environment and Sustainability). After watching one of her plays in the 1980’s, I fell in love with theatre and dance and abandoned my History College. That change gave me the opportunity to solidify my love for music and flourish as a human being. In 2009, a Brazilian documentary called “Dzi Croquettes” (with choreographies by Brooklyn native Lennie Dale) revealed the birth of the irreverent approach I so much loved in Regina. Lennie Dale fell in love with Bossa Nova in 1960 and inspired lots of local artists in Rio de Janeiro in a time when Brasil was under a dictatorship.

Maybe you heard about the war against drug dealers at Complexo do Alemão in Rio de Janeiro. Most of my hometown friends agree with the Army’s intervention to help Rio’s police force. The 400,000.00 neighborhood of Complexo do Alemão (German’s Complex) includes traditional areas like Penha, Inhaúma and Bonsucesso. At the end of World War II, a Polish immigrant bought the whole area and was mistaken as a German guy because of his accent (they called him the “twisted tongue guy.”) With the Soccer World Cup and Olympics coming to Rio in few years, the federal and state government decided to clean the area. Good move! It’s now or never!

Coincidently, Brazilians are celebrating 100 Years of composer Noel Rosa who lived in Penha and wrote one of the most beautiful slow sambas called “Meu Barracão” (in homage of his shack in Penha). In 1934 he met the big love of his life. What was her last name? Moraes. : )

In 2005 I participated on a project called “Danço-Te” by artist Bia Gayotto from São Paulo. Now she has a new project called Trading Places. It is inspired by Czech media philosopher and cultural theorist Villem Flusser's article that stated: “immigration is a creative activity that involves a certain double-consciousness, where the immigrant is always negotiating between home and the world.” The video provides an exchange between voice and body, generating an unsettling sense of dislocation. From physical, cultural and emotional perspectives Trading Places reflects on issues of immigration,
identity, culture and geographic interconnectivity. http://www.biagayotto.com/ The exhibition is scheduled for February at Kristie Engle Gallery.

Photo below by Bia Gayotto when we were filming for "Trading Places"
FOR YOU
“(…) What is a teacher? I’ll tell you: it isn’t someone who teaches something, but someone who inspires the student to give of her best in order to discover what she already knows.” (Quote from “The Witch of Portobello” by Paulo Coelho)
Merry Christmas (Feliz Natal) & Happy New Year (Feliz Ano Novo)
The photo below was taken in front of the San Francisco City Hall. Choreographer Rosangela Silvestre and I happily posing in front of the beautiful Shiva sculpture!

BRAZILIAN HEART
NOVEMBER 2010
SINCE 1998
www.katiabrazil.blogspot.com
Beyond this endless straight road between Iowa and Kansas is where I
belong. No clue where this place may be, but my joyful heart is there
already. I want to say I don’t worry about “belonging” anymore, but I
still do sometimes. On my left side is Keith, our bus driver who just
retired from the Army after more than 25 years. He’s a specialist in
everything about tanks, and just turned 50 years old. He wears a cap
with the logo of the bus company (Wind Stars) to hide his baldness,
has a very well trimmed moustache and a cool sense of humor. His only son is working on 3 majors at the Iowa State University: International Relations, Economy ad Political Science. The talent boy speaks Spanish and German and is learning Russian. I joke with the driver saying his son is already a spy at 18 years old.
Iowa woke up today with a new governor, actually, an “old” governor.
The guy already served 4 turns here. He’s affectionately called
“governor for life.”
During the first part of this trip I listen to my yoga teacher and
feel my lower intestine cramp. The food I ate last night upset my
tired body. Pizza at midnight was not a good choice. Pattonsburg…Here I am: Hwy 35, mile 77, around 80 miles to Kansas. So far I only saw scattered farmhouses and resting areas with the usual McDonald, gas station ($2.59 per gallon here) and empty cornfields along both sides of the 2-lane road. It’s a beautiful day with a blue sky and a fresh/cold wind swaying the 49-seat bus side to side. I’ve seen at least 6 dead raccoons by the side of the road. Oops! Make it 7 now. The bus is turning to the west blinding my eyes. I already turned off my laptop because I couldn’t see the screen. I’m glad I did. I feel calmer listening to my yoga teacher chanting while I write. Gallatin, Maysville…Exotic names, but my favorite so far is Tonganoxie. A flock of robins announce the next stop: Cameron. Ahead of us are 2 trailers and a State Park. My gut is still complaining once in a while. I better drink lots of water from now on. Time? It’s about 4:06pm and my Brazilian heart feels universal.
NEXT SHOW

Opening for Jair Oliveira (son of legendary Brazilian singer Jair Rodrigues)

Note: The Tonight Show experience was very cool. I sang three songs

BRAZILIAN BOOK
1822 by Laurentino Gomes
“How a wise man, a sad princess and a money crazy Scotsman helped D.
Pedro create Brazil, a country that had everything to go wrong.” The
book is dedicated to all Brazilian history teachers. “1822” is the
year Brasil got its Independence.

HISTORY
“(…) In 1787, when Thomas Jefferson was still ambassador in Paris, a Brazilian student from the University of Montpellier called Jose Joaquim da Maia (a.k.a. Vandek) asked him a question. He wanted help from the U.S. to make a revolution in Brazil. Jefferson, who had other more urgent concerns, refused, but made sure to report the case to the State Department.”
(Quote from “1822” by Laurentino Gomes)
FOR YOU
“(…) Tentei passar um mês sem rir
Conter o instinto sexual
Falar tanto sem me repetir
Fingir que sou bom sendo mau,
Tentando descobrir o jeito
De achar o amor perfeito
Essa coisa que não há.”
I tried to spend a month without laughing
To contain my sexual instinct
To pretend that I’m good being bad,
All that to find a way
To discover the perfect love
That love that doesn’t exist.

relationship with Rio de Janeiro)

One of my great pleasures in life is to gather fresh branches of
rosemary (Alecrim in Portuguese) from my garden, sniff, and add it to
a chicken stew. I just learned that Rosmarinus officinallis is “rose
of the sea” in Latin, and that it helps to restore blood circulation
and invigorate your digestion. In Brasil, they use it to treat asthma
and rheumatism, among other things. Ok, your caboclo friend here is
going back to the kitchen!

– O calor me penetra, o Sol me invade o senso,
e tudo em torno a mim se torna mais extenso,
tudo em que os olhos ponho:
o céu, o oceano, a mata...
E enquanto em gestação a Terra se dilata,
Dilata-se minha alma à gestação do Sonho.”
I expose myself to you. Summer, I’m all fecundity!
The heat penetrates; the sun invades the sense,
And everything around me becomes extended,
Everything that I put my eyes on:
The sky, the ocean, the greenery…
And while the Earth dilates in its gestation,
My soul dilates gestating a dream.

BRAZILIAN HEART / AUGUST 2010
BRAZILIAN HEART
AUGUST 2010
SINCE 1998
I’m very fond of James Taylor and Carole King’s songs and voices since my teen years. I couldn’t understand what they said then, but my heart transformed what I heard into sweetness, and that was enough for me. When I watched their DVD Live at the Troubadour my heart sang with them. Here’s what James said about his trip to Brasil in 1985:
"I had... sort of bottomed-out in a drug habit, my marriage with Carly had dissolved, and I had basically been depressed and lost for a while, " he recalled in 1995. "I sort of hit a low spot. I was asked to go down to Rio de Janeiro to play in this festival down there. We put the band together and went down and it was just an amazing response. I played to 300,000 people. They not only knew my music, they knew things about it and were interested in aspects of it that to that point had only interested me. To have that kind of validation right about then was really what I needed. It helped get me back on track. The song ‘Only a Dream in Rio’ was written in tribute to that night, with lines like I was there that very day and my heart came back alive.”

I met musician Derf Reklaw when he joined Viver Brasil Dance Company for the premiere of ALAFIA / Harmony at Ford Amphitheatre in Los Angeles. The movie is called “Brasiliantime.” It features Wilson das Neves, Mamão, João Parahyba, among others. Check it out!

AUGUST 2010
SINCE 1998
I’m very fond of James Taylor and Carole King’s songs and voices since my teen years.

MOVIE (“BRASILIANTIME”)
I met musician Derf Reklaw when he joined Viver Brasil Dance Company for the premiere of ALAFIA / Harmony at Ford Amphitheatre in Los Angeles. He told me he had traveled to São Paulo, Brasil to be part of a movie documenting Brazilian drummers meeting Djs who were influenced by Brazilian rhythms. The movie is called “Brasiliantime.” It features Wilson das Neves, Mamão, João Parahyba, among others. Check it out!

BRAZILIAN HEART
JULY 2010
SINCE 1998
When I started writing short stories last year, I thought about the books that inspired me when I was growing up. My mom collected Greek mythology stories for my sister and I, and I remember rescuing a collection of Middle East ones from the trash bin of a building where I used to live with my parents. Those stories made an impression on my view of the world. Later on, I watched Charlie Chaplin movies and thought every human being on earth should watch each one of them as part of their education.
Among the Brazilian Folk stories there is one that I’m fond of: Curupira. “This name comes from "tupi": curu,
boy, and pira, body. The Curupira is a spirit of nature and protector of the forests. It is a boy with red hairs who makes the men who wants to kill the animals confused and lost, because they follow the Caipora's footprints, but his feet are turned backwards, which means that the hunters are thinking that they are going to the place where he is going, but in fact are going to the place where he came from. It is said to be the first Brazilian legend, being told by José de Anchieta when he wrote about Indians fears.”

BRAZILIAN MUSIC HISTORY (CHORO)
Benedito Lacerda (1903-1958) and Pixinguinha are key names in the development of Choro music in Brasil. I used to sing a song called “Lapa” (B Lacerda/H. Martins) with a choir called Coro Cabeludo when Circo Voador moved from Arpoador to the Arcos da Lapa (an old acqueduct built in 1745 in downtown Rio). Here’s Pixinguinha playing Carinhoso (1917) with Benedito Lacerda on
flute plus Regional Group:

REMINISCING
My friend and events producer Denise Prado from São Paulo sent me this link to a video of my old band in Brasil called O Espírito da Coisa. We were taping for a TV Globo program called Mixto Quente. Since it was in the middle of summer, the band decided to perform wearing bathing suits. Great decision! http://www.youtube.com/watch? v=r_ypP7oG3UU

FOR YOU
Watching Gilberto Gil at the Royce Hall reminded me of places I’ve been in my life. Not physical places, but places where the senses took me by the hand and guided me to beautiful insights and taught me lessons. The show was priceless for some, remarkable to others, and it was heavenly to me. Gil, with his silver hair had Nobility written on his forehead. I was honored and blessed to be there.
Jacques Morelembaum who was playing cello with him sent Patricia Leão a message saying their production work in LA was the best in the United States. Great job, Pat and Beto from Brazilian Nites
Productions! Enjoy the video with Gil singing Bob Marley’s song.

Since 1998
This picture was taken at the old Temple Bar in Santa Monica when I first celebrated my Brazilian Heart Newsletter. This year the celebration will be at Casa Arjona. Javier and Gloria Arjona had been
throwing home concerts for quite sometime now. They are both teachers, and understand the power of sharing art with people. I’ll be at their intimate and outdoor place singing and telling stories about Brazilian culture this month. Come and join us. You’ll feel like you’re on my living room!
