Brazilian Heart
September 2010
Since 1998

My sister had it! She is moving to a new development in Itaipuaçu in
Rio de Janeiro where the streets are not totally paved yet, but where
she will be surrounded by unspoiled Nature. Itaipuaçu is a Tupi
Guarani word that means big black stone.
This is a link to a site called Club of the Adventurers that has
beautiful pictures of the State Park Serra da Tiririca located between Itaipu and Itaipuaçu. I’m planning my next trip already!

“(…) A ti me exponho. Verão, sou toda fecundidade!
– O calor me penetra, o Sol me invade o senso,
e tudo em torno a mim se torna mais extenso,
tudo em que os olhos ponho:
o céu, o oceano, a mata...
E enquanto em gestação a Terra se dilata,
Dilata-se minha alma à gestação do Sonho.”

I expose myself to you. Summer, I’m all fecundity!
The heat penetrates; the sun invades the sense,
And everything around me becomes extended,
Everything that I put my eyes on:
The sky, the ocean, the greenery…
And while the Earth dilates in its gestation,
My soul dilates gestating a dream.
(Quote of a poem by Brazilian poet Gilka Machado /1893-1980)

SINCE 1998

I’m very fond of James Taylor and Carole King’s songs and voices since my teen years. I couldn’t understand what they said then, but my heart transformed what I heard into sweetness, and that was enough for me. When I watched their DVD Live at the Troubadour my heart sang with them. Here’s what James said about his trip to Brasil in 1985:
"I had... sort of bottomed-out in a drug habit, my marriage with Carly had dissolved, and I had basically been depressed and lost for a while, " he recalled in 1995. "I sort of hit a low spot. I was asked to go down to Rio de Janeiro to play in this festival down there. We put the band together and went down and it was just an amazing response. I played to 300,000 people. They not only knew my music, they knew things about it and were interested in aspects of it that to that point had only interested me. To have that kind of validation right about then was really what I needed. It helped get me back on track. The song ‘Only a Dream in Rio’ was written in tribute to that night, with lines like I was there that very day and my heart came back alive.”

"TRIBO" will soon be released in Europe through AfriKool Entertainment in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and France! And I’m happy for Kevin Ricard, Sambaguru's percussionist, who is now playing in the new Tonight Show Band! Here's Kevin on a photo by Helene.

 “On one occasion,
my father painted the whole house
a brilliant orange.
We lived for a long time in a house,
as he said himself,
eternally dawning.”
(By Brazilian poet Adelia Prado)
