BRAZILIAN HEART / AUGUST 2010

BRAZILIAN HEART
AUGUST 2010
SINCE 1998

I’m very fond of James Taylor and Carole King’s songs and voices since my teen years. I couldn’t understand what they said then, but my heart transformed what I heard into sweetness, and that was enough for me. When I watched their DVD Live at the Troubadour my heart sang with them. Here’s what James said about his trip to Brasil in 1985:
"I had... sort of bottomed-out in a drug habit, my marriage with Carly had dissolved, and I had basically been depressed and lost for a while, " he recalled in 1995. "I sort of hit a low spot. I was asked to go down to Rio de Janeiro to play in this festival down there. We put the band together and went down and it was just an amazing response. I played to 300,000 people. They not only knew my music, they knew things about it and were interested in aspects of it that to that point had only interested me. To have that kind of validation right about then was really what I needed. It helped get me back on track. The song ‘Only a Dream in Rio’ was written in tribute to that night, with lines like I was there that very day and my heart came back alive.”

MOVIE (“BRASILIANTIME”)
I met musician Derf Reklaw when he joined Viver Brasil Dance Company for the premiere of ALAFIA / Harmony at Ford Amphitheatre in Los Angeles. He told me he had traveled to São Paulo, Brasil to be part of a movie documenting Brazilian drummers meeting Djs who were influenced by Brazilian rhythms.  The movie is called “Brasiliantime.” It features Wilson das Neves, Mamão, João Parahyba, among others. Check it out!

FOR YOU
 “On one occasion,
my father painted the whole house
a brilliant orange.
We lived for a long time in a house,
as he said himself,
eternally dawning.”
(By Brazilian poet Adelia Prado)

Peace, kiss and blessings,
Katia : )
