BRAZILIAN HEART
JULY 2010
SINCE 1998

When I started writing short stories last year, I thought about the books that inspired me when I was growing up. My mom collected Greek mythology stories for my sister and I, and I remember rescuing a collection of Middle East ones from the trash bin of a building where I used to live with my parents.  Those stories made an impression on my view of the world. Later on, I watched Charlie Chaplin movies and thought every human being on earth should watch each one of them as part of their education.
Among the Brazilian Folk stories there is one that I’m fond of: Curupira. “This name comes from "tupi": curu,
boy, and pira, body. The Curupira is a spirit of nature and protector of the forests. It is a boy with red hairs who makes the men who wants to kill the animals confused and lost, because they follow the Caipora's footprints, but his feet are turned backwards, which means that the hunters are thinking that they are going to the place where he is going, but in fact are going to the place where he came from. It is said to be the first Brazilian legend, being told by José de Anchieta when he wrote about Indians fears.”
